What Is Xeomin?

This treatment is an effective way to treat fine lines and wrinkles. It gives your skin a refreshed, rejuvenated appearance by using botulinum toxin to reduce the signs of aging.

How Long Does It Take to See the Results?

This treatment works quickly. You can expect to see the results develop within five to ten days. Over the next few weeks, the effects will set in gradually until they achieve their maximum level.

How Does This Treatment Work?

Xeomin is an injectable that relaxes away your fine lines and wrinkles. To understand how it works, it’s helpful to know a little about the natural aging process. Why do we get wrinkles to begin with? The answer is that all wrinkles are caused by the muscle contractions that make our facial expressions. Young skin maintains its smoothness with several substances that occur naturally in the body, including collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid. They allow our skin to move and fold without developing creases.

As we get older, we produce less and less of these anti-aging elements. Collagen declines 1% to 2% each year after we hit our 30s. Blood flow to our skin lessens, meaning that we receive less of the nutrients we need to rejuvenate ourselves. As a result, every time our muscles contract and our skin folds, a crease forms on our skin. Over time, these creases develop into fine lines that ultimately become wrinkles. This treatment works by temporarily relaxing the muscles that cause the lines, allowing the wrinkles we have to smooth away.

Can This Treatment Be Used As a Preventative Measure?

If you are starting to see fine lines, you can use this treatment before they become wrinkles.

Which Wrinkles Can This Treatment Improve?

This treatment is approved to treat most of the same wrinkles as Botox. It is a versatile solution that can give you improvements in many areas of your face. Some of the most commonly treated areas are:

  • Glabellar lines around your mouth

  • Frown lines between your eyebrows

  • Crow’s feet at the corners of your eyes

  • Brow lines on your forehead

How Is This Treatment Different From Botox?

This treatment is comparable to Botox in many ways. Both are injectables that use botulinum toxin, and both work by targeting the cause of our wrinkles. These products take about the same amount of time to work and last for equivalent periods. The dosage is also about the same. One unit of this product equals approximately one unit of Botox. However, there are some subtle differences between the two treatments. Here are two:

1. Molecular Properties

The structure of this injectable and Botox are slightly different, although both are forms of botulinum toxin. Botox is comprised of onabotulinumtoxinA while Xeomin uses incobotulinumtoxinA. The main difference is that the molecules of Botox are encased in protein while those of this injectable are not.

2. Susceptibility to Antibodies

While it doesn’t happen very often, some people can develop an immunity to Botox. As a result, the effectiveness of the product diminishes. This happens because the immune system can recognize the protein casing of the Botox molecules and develop antibodies against it. Since Xeomin doesn’t have any protein casing, it is considered a “naked neurotoxin”. It has the advantage of not triggering an immune response that could inhibit its results.
